Certain niches are more profitable than others. It’s hard to have to admit it but it’s true. When using third party ad systems, the keywords that will be used for selecting ads will most likely relate to your niche, and thus you are constrained by the limited or infinite amount of ads your niche provides.

Take blogging about blogging for example. Until recently, the majority of the ads relating to that niche were dominated by hosting and domain buying advertisements. While relative to your subject, few people click on these ads since your reader-base either already has a blog and as such already has both a domain and hosting, or they are the causal reader with no interest in making a blog of their own. This leaves posters in this niche struggling to include abstract keywords relating to different niches in the hopes of getting higher “clicking-quality” ads.
If I included the phrase:
“The iPhone is the best gadget ever”
The ads I was given from Google Adsense would most likely give me an Apple product ad(s) or some relating to gadgets, both of which are far superior in click through rates than domain and hosting ads. However in doing so repetitively it can become a hassle to you, and a blatantly obvious “scam” to your readers that your a greedy bastard. It’s OK too blog for money, just don’t make it so obvious to your “sensitive” reader-base.
The solution would be to use direct advertising agreements with companies, however with a site such as this with such a small user-base it is nearly impossible to gain their interest. You can try using a couple different third-party ad vendors (such as: Google, Widgetbucks, chitika, Tribal Fusion, and Adbrite) and see which one works best. This won’t solve the problem of your ads most likely being limited to ads relating to your niche, but it will at least allow you to identify which ad program nets you more money, and as such lets you determine what sort of ads your reader-base is attracted to. Knowing the target age group for your blog can also help you determine what ads would be most successful.
However one thing you have to remember with all this is:
The Content Comes First. Without content your site is nothing. Ad revenue will come by itself if you keep putting in more quality content. So if you find yourself hassling to much with the problem of the success of ads, just take a step back and focus on the core of your site, the content.
