How To Double Your Subscribers

Posted by Niklas Kunkel in June 17th 2008

How many subscribers have you lost over the lifetime of your site simply because you only have a partial feed instead of a full-post feed? This generation of streamlining the means of obtaining information allows subscribers to read your full posts in their RSS reader without ever having to go to visit to your site. People don’t want to have to go through the hassle of clicking through links and scrolling through pages to get to the information they want. They want it now, and the worst part is they can. And there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. With thousands of other blogs out there delivering the exact same content as you, you as the blogger have to remember the relationship between you and yours users and your place in the food chain. You depend on them to read your content, they don’t need you at all.

After reading that, maybe you’ve just declared these people your worst nightmare, but hear me out before you make those kind of assumptions. These people are a valuable part of your user-base that you can’t live without. So don’t fight them, cater to them! Give them what they want, and more!

Is Your Content Worthless After Its Debut?

Posted by Niklas Kunkel in June 16th 2008

How many times do you post a new article, to have it spike some traffic the next day, and then never land any more significant traffic after that? Does your site seem to depend on you constantly writing new articles without your older articles getting you any attention at all? This is a simple problem lots of blogs have that has a HUGE effect on how your blog will continue to grow in the future.

Here’s the one phrase that will define every single one of your users.

“People Are Lazy and Quick-Thinking”

Maybe that sounds a bit harsh to call your valuable users that, but it’s completely true. If I’m done reading an article I’ve found interesting and there’s nothing left on the page, of course I’m going to leave and go do whatever else interests me. Users aren’t going to specifically browse through your other articles in your archives or through the search button. The days that those fetched any significant amount of users are long over.

Comments - The Most Valuable Asset of A Blog

Posted by Niklas Kunkel in March 21st 2008

Comment BubbleWhether you realize it or not, comments are the most valuable part of your blog. They are the reactions, questions, and thoughts that go through the readers mind after reading your content, and you need to know how to leverage off of them.

The main function of the comment is to provide feedback on whatever comes to mind to your reader. There are 3 specific categories of comments, each of which will help you in a variety of ways.

  1. The Remark
  2. The Question
  3. The Trackback

Small Scale Social Networking Sites Also the Most Effective?

Posted by Niklas Kunkel in March 18th 2008

You submit your articles everyday to Digg, Technorati, and Delicious, in the hopes that one of them will gain traction and net you some traffic. However no one besides you ever votes your stuff up, and so you’re caught in the endless cycle that never lands you more than a few clicks a day. With Digg and other Social Networking sites, such as Technorati and Delicious, dominated by the big players in blogging, the idea of leveraging off of social networking for smaller blogs seems unrealistic if not impossible. The problem is you’re targeting the completely wrong audience!

The Flaws in Link Exchange Widgets

Posted by Niklas Kunkel in March 14th 2008

The flaws in link and content exchange widgets such as BlogRush have been repeatedly plagued with flaws that either render them utterly useless, or provide biased services in favor of the elite. Here I have identified many of the factors that taint these services despite envisioned theoretical success.

They Link To Irrelevant Content

Your content is frequently mixed with other content that is totally irrelevant. Simply by using a keyword such as “fat” to describe something in your article brings an onslaught of unrelated posts in your widget. Even worse still is the problem of links on your widget that go to non-existent blogs or freshly created blank blogs with only the hello world post displayed in an attempt by users to cheat the referral system.

How Lists Can Generate Massive Traffic

Posted by Niklas Kunkel in March 13th 2008

The problem with an article is that once it’s been read, all the value has been extracted by the reader. They’re not going to bookmark it just to read the same thing again tomorrow. Lists however are completely different in that they supply the user with a massive amount of value. If you were to write a post with useful links on all aspects that needed to be focused on to start a blog, the list would contain so much informational value to them that they would bookmark it. Which leads me to my next point.

SEO Through Site Organization

Posted by Niklas Kunkel in March 10th 2008

SEO LogoMany bloggers seem to cram their posts into as many categories and tags as possible with the idea that it will generate more traffic due to being “search-able” under each term. I’m here to tell you that what you’ve been doing has been hurting you more than helping you.

To understand this, you have to pretend that Google bot is your retarded 3 year old cousin. Yep, I’m labeling the almighty Google that I regard so high as a retarded child. When Googlebot scans your pages for indexing he sees your site as a giant tree. Whenever he finds content in multiple categories he’s confused beyond belief and doesn’t know what to index it as. So what does someone do when they have too many options? They choose nothing over something.

To fix this I’ve compiled a few quick and easy steps to backtrack out of the rut you’ve landed yourself into. …..Click here to read more

Summarising Posts

Posted by Niklas Kunkel in March 6th 2008

Summarising your posts can affect a lot more than just your overall page look. In fact, by summarising your posts instead of having each article displayed in its entirety, you expose your visitor to about 4 to 5 article titles as soon as they open your page.

Does Age Reflect Intelligence?

Posted by Niklas Kunkel in March 4th 2008

Does age reflect Intelligence? Are we still living by the social stereotype that the young are dim-witted and dull? In any case, what do we see when we look at how old someone is? With age we see experience, and with experience we see authority. Therefore one is forced to conclude that people are more convinced by older writers due to their credibility on the subject.

However, what if a particularly young writer were to write blog posts that reflected knowledge on the subject. Would you ignore his age and simply see that he is a credible and knowledgeable person on the subject? Or would you look at him in disgust and convince yourself that he isn’t smart enough to tell you about that topic?

Adding Pictures to a Blog Post

Posted by Niklas Kunkel in March 3rd 2008

Quilted Mosaic

I have used the system of thought of including a picture with every single post. Be it relative to the post’s content or just a random picture pertaining to the subject, it is a subtle addition that can give a face-lift to any blog. …..Click here to read more
